Leak Detection in Huntingdale

Huntingdale is a smaller, settled suburb, and it sits at an awkward age for plumbing — old enough that things have started to fail, new enough that most of what is buried has never been touched.

The in-between age

Much of Huntingdale went up through the eighties. That puts it roughly forty years on, which produces a very particular split.

Above ground, it has all been replaced. Taps, mixers, cistern internals, flexible hoses, shower fittings — most Huntingdale houses are on their second or third set, and often from more than one era. That is where a lot of the indoor leaks start. A flexible hose has a finite life and the one under your vanity may have been fitted twenty years ago by someone nobody remembers.

Below ground, it is usually original. Service lines, the runs under the slab, the drainage — that is generally still what went in with the house, and it has now had four decades of ground movement, tree growth and constant pressure.

So in Huntingdale we are looking at both ends of the property's history at once, which is different to the newer estates where there is only one.

Mature gardens, mature trees

Forty years is long enough for trees to get properly established, and roots go where the water is. On the supply side that rarely matters. On the waste side it does — an older drain with a disturbed joint is exactly what a root will find. If your problem is a drain that keeps coming back rather than a meter that will not sit still, that is usually why. Blocked drains

Retic systems here are established too, and often rebuilt in sections over the years. A cracked retic line pours into sand and shows nothing at the surface, which is why so many Huntingdale leaks announce themselves as a bill rather than a puddle. When the bill is the first sign

How we find it

We start at the meter, because that settles the biggest question first: is the property losing pressurised water at all?

Corroded brass relief valve held up in front of a rust-streaked hot water cylinder

If the meter keeps turning with everything off, it is a supply leak and we narrow it down by isolating sections, then pinpoint it acoustically. If the meter sits perfectly still but the ground is wet, it is not a supply leak — it is storm water or a drain fault, and that is a completely different repair. Establishing which one you have is the first thing we do and there is no charge for it. How leak detection works
