A cistern leaks into the bowl, not onto the floor. That is why it hides.
Water passes from the cistern into the pan continuously, drains away, and nothing about it looks wrong. There is no puddle, no stain, no damp patch. The only evidence is a faint sound you stop noticing after a week, a slight ripple on the surface of the water in the bowl, and eventually a water bill that has gone up for no apparent reason.
The volume surprises people. A cistern leak runs every hour of every day, whether the house is occupied or empty, and it does not stop for holidays. Over a full quarter a slow one can quietly add up to more than a dramatic burst pipe caught in an afternoon.

The dye check
The check we run to confirm it takes about fifteen minutes and settles the question completely.

A little food dye goes into the cistern — not the bowl — and the toilet is left unflushed. If colour appears in the bowl afterwards, water is passing from the cistern through the outlet seal, and that is your leak. If the bowl stays clear, the cistern is holding and whatever is running up the bill is somewhere else.
It is a genuinely useful test because it is definitive. There is no judgement call and no guesswork, and it is one of the first things we do when the complaint is a bill rather than a puddle. There is no call-out fee for finding out.
What has usually failed
There are only a handful of things inside a cistern, and all of them are repairable.
The outlet valve seal
A rubber seal sits between the cistern and the pan. It hardens, distorts or catches a piece of grit, and then it no longer seats. This is the single most common cause of a continuously running toilet, and it is a small part.
The inlet valve
The valve that refills the cistern. When it fails to shut off fully, the cistern overfills and the excess runs down the overflow into the pan. Same symptom, different part.
The float or the water level
Set too high, and water reaches the overflow and runs away permanently. Sometimes it is the adjustment rather than the component.
The flush button mechanism
A button or rod that stays fractionally depressed holds the outlet valve open. Common on push-button cisterns.
The pan connector or the cistern-to-pan seal
This one does leak onto the floor rather than into the bowl, so it announces itself differently — water at the base of the toilet or a damp patch on the tiles.
What the repair involves
Almost always a part rather than a toilet.

The cistern is isolated and drained, the failed component replaced, the level set correctly, and the whole thing tested through a few full cycles to confirm it holds. On most Harrisdale toilets the suite is well under fifteen years old — the suburb was only gazetted in 2007 — so the ceramics are fine and it is the internals that have worn.
Replacing an entire toilet because a seal has hardened is the sort of quote we would rather talk you out of. If the pan is sound, it stays.

When it is worth doing now rather than later
